How can I prevent Outlook 2003 from Automatically Opening new mess

Recently had a new computer installed at work. The Outlook 2003 does not
seem to keep any of the preferences that I select from one session to the
next. Most recently, no matter how I customize the view, or whether I select
the reading pane or not, or the preview pane or not, it has begun just
automatically opening all new messages as they arrive--without my having
changed the settings.

This makes it extremely difficult for me to figure out which messages I have
already seen and which ones I have not.

Does this program need to be reinstalled, or do I just not "get it" about
how wonderful Outlook 2003 is??? >;-(

Define "opening" - outlook does not "open" messages - it will preview the
selected message, but it won't physically open a message in a new window. If
they are getting marked as read, right click on the gray border of the
preview pane and select reading pane settings - disable the mark as read
options and see if the problem goes away. if not, it's something else.

If you want the preview pane off, add /nopreview to the shortcut you use to
open outlook. See http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/commandlines.htm
