A couple of new screens with progress bars have begun flashing by
during shutdown, but they go by too fast for me to see what they are.
Is there a way to pause or halt windows so I can see what these
screens are about?

Have a home upkeep question? Try my help page.
It's sort of an alt.home.repair FAQ. http://www.factsfacts.com/MyHomeRepair

I don't know how to pause the shutdown sequence, but if
it was me I'd record it using a camcorder pointed at the
screen and then play it back slow or frame by frame.

Perhaps it's worth looking at the Event Log? Type "event viewer" into the
help system and look at "using event viewer" .... see if there are any
warnings logged at the time you shutdown.

Using Event Viewer
Event Viewer maintains logs about program, security, and system events on
your computer. You can use Event Viewer to view and manage the event logs,
gather information about hardware and software problems, and monitor Windows
security events.
Open Event Viewer.
Notes
To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance
and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event
Viewer.
For information about using Event Viewer, in Event Viewer, on the Action
menu, click Help.
