How can I monitor (if not specify) the start of a service?

I have installed a new Internet Security suite, provided by my ISP. Selected
services such as the firewall are supposed to run whenever the computer is on
(even without users logged on). I'd like to see a log of the actualy start of
this service in eventvwr. How can I specify this? It seems to me that I
should be able to add a feature to the service which I want to see in
eventvwr.
Moreover - how can I ensure a service starts at startup (as opposed to just
during user logon)?

Some services startups are recorded in the system/application logs [use
Event Viewer to see them] during startup and it may help to also enable
auditing of system events in Local Security Policy if you are using XP Pro.
If the service is set to start automatically it will start before anyone
logs on unless something is preventing it from starting at all. You can use
services.msc to see the status of any service. Since a personal firewall can
be disabled by malware or a software conflict I always recommend that anyone
using cable/DSL also use a firewall device even if it is a cheap NAT/PAT
router such as the ones from Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc. --- Steve

At present, the service startup I want to record in the system or application
log is not recorded. How can I enable that?

You can't. If it does not show there then you are out of luck. You could try
booting into the alternate startup mode and select step by step confirmation
or logged mode that will create a file called bootlog.txt that will give you
an idea what is going on at startup and in what order. --- Steve
