Windows XP How can I make mp3?

How can I make my own mp3s? Examples: messages for/from my friends. I'm not asking how to rip a CD, but I am asking how I can make one from scratch.

To make one from scratch you would need some basic sound editing software.

A quick search on download.com showed this application which may be able to do the above for free:

Record your message, presumably using a microphone and Windows recorder, to make your WAV file.

Then you can use software such as Ian has linked to to convert the WAV file to mp3.

The one you want is the 'Music Converter' it will work well with any sound file.
