What are you trying to achieve? You can do quite a lot with what is already

I'd say that powerpoint already gives lots of control over the custom
animations. eg. direction and speed

As Lucy and TAJ said start by making sure you are using all the options
available. It's amazing what can be done in the GUI.
It is however possible to "tweak" the inbuildt animations to create custom
effects
BUT ....
You will need to have a very good understanding of the animation behavious
and be a good coder. It's very easy to end up with unexpected effects!
What exactly did you have in mind?

I wanted to take a 3D cube with text on it, turn it so another side of
it was visible and have text on the now visible side of the cube.
I am also having trouble using spin emphasis animation. I just want
to make a square turn and become a diamond, but it spins too much.
Any help is appreciated.

Don't think the cube can be done (but I might be proven wrong)
The diamond >> in spin amount choose Custom
Type in 45 and then hit enter (you must hit enter or tab else it will not
"stick")

I don't think that can be done natively and I don't know of an add-in, so it
looks like flash would have to be the way to go. Or consider a different
concept <g>. For example, if you are using a cube to represent dice as in
gambling/risk, maybe playing cards would work, or if you are saying all
sides of the same thing perhaps a spinning coin would do (which you can do
natively), or if it was a funky way to move from point to point there are
plenty of other ways you could go, see what I mean? See me, I'm all for the
easy life so if the first idea falls into the too hard basket I look for
another idea
