Hi, my scanner, HP psc 1350 has a physical scan button that only seems to
work with HP's software. is there a way i can trap that event and run
another program? my ultimate goal is to make it easy to scan a document and
instantly make it into a pdf and attach it to an email. any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know about the software supplied with your HP, but if you got some
sort of Toolbox software for the buttons on your scanner, you should be able
to specifiy the action of the buttons.

toolbox? as in tool kit or software developers kit?

No, not a software developers kit.
It is actually the Canon software. Or in your case, HP software.

I have a Canon 8400F scanner, it has a software called CanoScan Toolbox Ver
4.8. One of the functions of that software is to set the action of the
buttons on the scanner.

This Canon has four buttons. Email, PDF, Scan and Copy. In the Toolbox
software you set the action or program to perform when that button is
pressed.
(Toolbox must be running for the buttons to do anything).

I personally do not use them, but they are there and I have the toolbox
installed.

I just use Irfanview and the scanner's TWAIN interface for making quick
copies and I use other programs for PDF generation. To Email a scan, I make
the scan, then attach the scan file to Email in the Email program.

Irfanview can be setup to send a scan file via email.
Irfanview is free for individuals. You must install the plug-in for email
capability.
Read the help in Irfanview on email.

I don't know if this will work for certain, but here goes. In Windows, go
into My Computer, rt-click on the scanner icon, then go into the scanner
properties. Here you should see an events tab that allows you to select the
event you want to launch with that particular button.
