how can i format the phone number entry in contacts to remove the brackets
around the area code and the dash between number groups. This is so the
directory entry is compatible with my smart phone dialling.
 
You can't. Masking of phone numbers in Outlook is hard coded. Developers of
synchronization software should know that and develop their software
accordingly.
 
What smart phone? if you mean Windows Smartphone, there is no need to remove
the brackets and the dash. Properly formatted numbers will be dialed
correctly by the phone.
