1. Close Outlook
2. Assuming a POP email account, copy your pst file to the CD. (Default
location on XP is C:\Documents and Settings\{Your Username here}\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\)
3. Copy the pst file to the HDD on the laptop and remove any read-only
attribute (right-click, properties). Do NOT overwrite any existing pst file
4. Open Outlook and do File-Open-Outlook Data File. Then copy your Conctacts
from the old file to the new...

Hi Gordon:

I did EXACTLY as you directed and when I got to the\Microsoft\outlook there
was NO .pst file.

any suggestions where it might be hiding?

Bob

Gordon. I did fine a file called "Microsoft Outlook Personal Folder (.pst)"
that is a 280 mb file. It appears to be an archive file. Is that the one?

You've hit it - it's a hidden file. You need to enable hidden files in
Explorer view.
In Explorer go to Tools-Folder Options-View and check the radio button that
says "Show hidden files and folders".

Sorry to bug you Gordon but The "show hidden files and folders" button was
checked in Windows explorer and still NO .pst files.

If that's the case then there is no pst file there! Do a search using
your File search function. If using the Windows search function, go to
Advanced options and make sure you are looking for hidden and system files.

I did the search and came up with the following 6 files:

~archive.pst.tmp in My Documents
archive " "

outlook in C;\Documents & Settings\bob\local
settings\aplication data\microsoft\outlook

~outlook.pst.tmp in Ditto above

archive in H:\outlook contacts (H is my backup hardreive)
~.archive\pst\tmp

Which one should I copy to the DVD? And once I do that to what location on
the laptop to I copy it to?

Bob

So I copy that whole 279 mb folder to a DVD and the copy it into outlook on
the laptop, correct?

Not quite. Copy to DVD yes. BUT do NOT copy it to the Outlook folder on
the laptop. Copy to a different location. Remove any read-only attribute
(Right-Click-properties).
then in Outlook do File-Open-Outlook Data File and navigate to where you
copied it to.
You then have two options - either drag and drop the data from the old
file to the new, or, set the old file as the default delivery location.
(File-Data File Management, highlight the file and click on "Set as
default").
