How can I enter calendar items without changing my availability?

I use my calendar as a to do list. When I enter items I would like the
default color to be white so that my availability shows as free.
 
That default is not one you can change.

Try using the TaskPad. I have many posts about how to make it date specific
(like a to do list)
 
Another alternative is to use the Task function within Outlook. You can set
it to alarm the same as the Calendar does.
