With the old viewer, this could be done.

With the new 2003 viewer, it does not appear to be listed
in the registry with a CLSID.

Hi James,

You are correct. One of the goals of the new PowerPoint Viewer 2003 was
that it could run without any kind of installation. As a consequence of
this requirement, we do not put any kind of CLSID in the registry.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) feel strongly that the
PowerPoint Viewer should have this kind of feature, don't forget to send
your feedback to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also why it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible. Each submission should be
a single suggestion (not a list of suggestions).

4. As I understand things, the old viewer won't work in
XP. I haven't proved this but read the rumor somewhere.

The old viewer works in Windows XP but doesn't play back all the features of
PowerPoint XP.
5. The newer PPT files won't be read with the old viewer.

It should read them but again, won't play back any features introduced since
PPT97.
