How can I eliminate multiple downloads of emails in Outlook?

I have Office 2000 SR-1 Professional. I am getting multiple downloans of
email messages. I have a LAN including a desktop and a laptop. I have
configured Outlook on both to allow emails to remain on the server for 1 day
or until files are deleted, so that all emails will be downloaded by both
computers. (If I have emails deleted from the server by one computer and the
other is offline, the other may never get the download.) How can I configure
Oulook to download each email only once?

None of these sites are applicable to Outlook 2000. One correctly identifies
the problem apparently; the email identification that prevents download of
the same email again is not there. There is no solution offered for my
version of Outlook.

My problem is getting worse; now I am getting six downloads of each email.
Is there any help available from anyone?

Dear Oliver:

The link has good suggestions but they do no apply to 2000.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317945/en : This indicates resolution
is in 2002 SP 2. The Comentum.com link addresses antivirus software as a
source, but again, the refence is to Office XP Service Pack.

I believe that the antivirus software causes Outlook to delete the unique ID
numbers of each of the email messages that prevents downloading during future
synchronizations, before the Deleted Items folder is emptied. See
