Windows XP Home edtition Version 5.1 SP2
My computer has 2 removable drives, each with 3 partitions. I use Paragon
Drive Copy to copy the whole of the main drive to the other drive as a
backup. I want to automate this procedure by scheduling it but Drive Copy
throws up an error that Drive D is in use and demands an input to allow a
reboot. If I'm not present when it is scheduled it just stalls waiting for my
input !!!
If I could shut down the secondary drive first, I don't see there would be
any problem, but how do I make the secondary drive shut down ?
Perhaps it should be obvious but I cannot see how to do it.

You can shutdown hardware by opening device mgr, expand the tree,R.click
on it,select "disable".To shutdown hardware thru other methods, try running
a script,to locate or create one,go to: http://www.microsoft.com/technet
At technet,locate script center.

Firstly I don't see how to automate an action in Device Manager and secondly
won't that mean that the drive won't re-open when I next boot up?

By "removable" do you mean "external" drives? If so, unplug/switch off
the offender.
If they are internal drives you need dual boot options. Also Paragon
doesn't have the "brains" of Acronis True Image.

Try dismounting the volume by using the fsutil volume dismount command.

fsutil volume dismount d:

Assuming they are external drives, have you tried the "Safely Remove
Hardware" icon in the system tray? It probably won't work if the drive
is in use, but it's worth trying; nothing to lose.
