Hi Jake,
You can change the input and display languages of English
Windows XP by taking the following steps:

1) Control panel / Regional and Language Options /
Languages / check install files for east asian languages
2) Reboot if it was not already enabled
3) Return to that location, click details / Add / select
your language
4) Select the default input language
5) Return to the Regional and Language Options dialog,
select the language for non-Unicode programs (Chinese)

By performing these steps you will be able to input
Chinese via the IME toolbar, and view Chinese text and
programs.

In order to change your entire Windows interface to
Chinese you will have to install the MUI. See details
here:

Good luck,

No you must purchase and install the full Chinese version of your flavour of
Windows.

So what Perdita was talking about? I suppose you're who to
believe as you have [M$] at your name? Ok, what about
adding another language to Jake's computer say Russian?

Cheers,
Roy.

I believe that what Perdita (love that name!) was saying is that, while you
can change the input and display as Scattman indicated ... in order to
change the entire interface, you must install the MUI (Multilingual User
Interface Pack) and that only comes as a bundle with the OS ... you cannot
buy it separately.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong ...

Roy.

I don't know where you got the MUI from because ...

Take a look at the following MS website ... http://tinyurl.com/kf2u

While one can buy a localized version of XP, it is not the only way (which
is what you appear to say) ... one can also purchase the English version of
XP Pro bundled with the MUI Pack ... which is all I said (or meant to say)
.... period.

While it's still a purchase and not something one can add to an existing OS,
the user does not have to be restricted to the 'chosen flavour in the
language of his choice', he can have the English version with MUI, if he so
wishes.

btw ... to clarify my previous post, I don't mean to imply that one can buy
XP Pro with MUI through retail channels ... one cannot. The MS website
dealing with MUI states clearly that "the WinXP MUI is sold only through
Volume Licensing programs such as the Microsoft Open License Program (MOLP /
Open), Select, and Enterprise agreement (or with a new computer as an OEM
version at customer request)".

The original user asked only how to show Chinese in his
programs, which my instructions answered. The user does
NOT have to purchase Chinese XP to acheive that goal. I
did not realize MUI was not available to any user to
purchase, so excuse my mistake.

Exactly what I stated earlier! To qualify for OL or VL licensing you must
purchase at least 5 licences at a cost of around £1500 - the average user
cannot afford to do that, so, therefore, they do not qualify for the MUI.

And you claim to work for MS?! The original poster wants XP in Chinese - the
only way he can accomplish that is to purchase his desired flavour of XP in
Chinese.

Don't worry about it, she did the same thing in another post. Apparently, I
am ignorant because she says "You are wrong (again!), no such thing exists.
There is a MUI for Office (applies to VL only) but not Windows."
