Hi,

Occasionnaly, I use realplayer. BUT I don't want it's running his
"realsched".
In Real, I choosed to UNtick the feature allowing auto-update so I expect to
be free of this process in my task list.

How can I instruct MSAS not to allow it instead of having a beautifull
warning : this is a known prog I (MSAS) allow it to modify startup list.

I'm afraid this functionality isn't something Microsoft Antispyware can do.

Think about the legal issues--RealPlayer is something you knowingly chose to
install and can choose to uninstall. You can manipulate it's options and
preferences to try to get it to run the way you want it to.

Microsoft provides an OS which is intended to be an even playing field for
all vendors. I don't think they can do this.

I know exactly what you are talking about--the more egregious offender, I
think, is QuickTime.

My question was "how XP+MSAS working as my computer's OS can help me
controling a soft which starts at each boot without need" : this schedule
companion is not mentionned on the license agreement as an obligation and no
option seems to be able to disable it. As I don't have evidence of what it
is dooing, I think it must be treated as a SPYWARE (or this could be a good
exemple).
As the owner of my computer, I put something in the blocked section. I
don't think there is any legal issue if the OS help me keeping it out of the
auto-running processes without the drastic solution "banning exe for all
users".

Here the only way I know to turn off the features but
when you use RealPlayer it is active, Its sounds like you
may of tried this but if not this may work.

Open RealPlayer then goto Tools on the top bar and then
choose preferences

Goto Automatic Services

click that and uncheck watch folder's and devices

Then to Auto Update

Uncheck the Box "Automatically download & install
important updates"

The to Message Centre

Click Configure Message Centre

Uncheck every item in this page

Then Click OK on both the message screen and the main
control panel screen to exit and see if it still appears
but you may need to reboot first, Im really not sure as I
do not use RealPlayer ;)

Here's a bit from the Help Page:

The Automatic Services Preferences page enables you to
specify which services you want active while RealPlayer
is not running.

Note: The settings on the Automatic Services Preferences
page only apply when RealPlayer is turned off. When
RealPlayer is in use, all automatic services will be
active.

Hope This Helps

Andy

I don't disagree with you, in terms of the specific app, or similar things,
like QuickTime. I think we need to take these behaviors up with the
vendors, though. One quick source of feedback is uninstalls, I suspect, or
grabbing possible open source alternatives, if they exist. It'd be very
nice if there were a clear feedback method such as happens when you refuse
3rd party cookies. If the vendors notice that folks aren't using their
product, they will change.

Have you tried turning it off via msconfig?

Start
Run
type 'msconfig'
OK
Last tab is Startup items.
Uncheck stuff from RealPlayer (and any other undesireables)

{NOTE: Under the Command header mine says:
"C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlayer.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER"
In other words, it is not hard to find.}

Apply
OK

You may need to reboot.

Also, the final column is where MS has it stored; registry, Startup
folder, etc.

Thanks Aaron, MSconfig is a good way for a lot of startup problems. You
were kind to remind it.

In fact my question wasn't how to disable it the first time but "When I
disable it in MSAS, how can it be kept disabled in the future?".
My question was first related to Realplayer as I forgot one (usefull) untick
but it could be with any other software where auto-start is a default
behaviour.

I think this feature could be realy usefull in other circumstances.
