Dear all,

My computer was configured by administrator to automatically download
updates and then automatically restart in order to apply changes. But
this is extremely annoying: I lost my files several times. For
instance, today, I just left for a dinner, and when I came back, my
computer was restarted and all my stuff was gong, including a document
I was editing and some diagram I was drawing.

Can anybody tell me is that a way that I can configure my system not
to restart without my permission? (please note that I don't have
administrator previledge on my computer... can any help would be
greatly appreciated if no administrator previledge is needed...)

Thanks a lot,

-Walala

Dear Dave,

Thanks for your answer.

But as I said the previledge was not controled by me. When I see the
"automatic update" section in the control panel, it was all grayed...
no options to choose... I cannot do anything...

Any other tricks to stall auto-restart?

Thanks a lot,

-Walala

Dave,

I have talked with them, but they are really single-minded. They just
think that whenever Microsoft has an update, we should install it,
otherwise we will be attacked by the hacker... You see, M$, Windows,
and our admin made me mad...

There is absolutely no trick that can hinder the auto-reboot function?

Thanks,

-Walala

I often have long simulation job running day and night... is it too
annoying that the job progress in middel and get rebooted?

Can the PC be configured to resumed whatever job after rebooting?

-Walala

If your job requires that the PC run uninterrupted, then the issue is
with your company policy and is best handled in that manner. In
otherwords it is a people issue NOT a software issue. If IT "wants" to
shut down a connected PC that "they" control, it IS going down.

That should be a function of the long running job. The software should
allow for reboots, intentional or otherwise. It should checkpoint
every so often. Otherwise, I wouldn't attempt to run it.

Cliff

You can reconfigure automatic updates to download and install updates at a
certain time if the machines are running 24x7. Downloading and installing at
3am might be more attractive option for users.

The other option is to download and prompt user to install. Obviously there
is a co-operation that is required to make sure this works successfully.

You'll need to speak with the admin and discuss the options and the benefits
of each.

In the meantime make sure you save your work on a regular basis. Learn the
keyboard shortcut to save your files and this will save you some time.
