How best to "wake up" from standby mode?

On a notebook, what is the most effective way to resume power during stand
by mode?. I find that neither mouse nor keyboard clicks will wake it up,
only pressing the power on button does.

Is this the way XP/notebooks are supposed to work? I'm most familiar with
desktops and Win98SE. I'm just using my daughter's notebook with XP/SP1
while I set it up for her.
 
It all depends on your brand of notebook. On my Toshiba,
you can actually CHANGE what the power button does after
it goes to stand by or sleep mode.

But yes, POWER button does wake up my notebook from sleep,
so it is normal.
