How Backup Office Data Files?

I did a search for this in google groups, but found no answers.

My problem. I need to install XP Pro. I have XP HE but I need to do a clean
install and this will wipe out the Outlook 2000 personal folders and address
book. I can't figure out how to save them.

In previous versions of Outlook, I could back-up the personal address book
(PAB file) and the personal folders (PST files). And they could be
restored. In Outlook 2000 these files now have a Office Data File
extension. How do you back them up now? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Roger

They are still called *.pst. If you go to Tools-Folder options-View (in
Windows Explorer) and uncheck the box "Hide extensions for known file types"
you will see that the file is still pst!

I never use the back up utilities in Outlook or OE -
they've been unreliable but you can try it - it's under the
EXPORT selection in the FILE menu. As you go through the
process, you'll be able to choose to export to a pst file.

If you don't trust that procedure, you can do what I do -
It takes a little time, but I go find the files and back
them up myself.

In XP home, make sure you can see hidden files and folders
as well as file extensions. (You can find these in the
FOLDER OPTIONS.) Then, look in Documents and Settings under
your user name as follows (just substitute your user name
for Chris):

C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\. You'll see 2 pst files (the
personal folder and archived folder), a PAB file (personal
address book) and a data file (.dat).

Copy all of those files and back them up to a CD or some
other place. After you're done installing everything,
before opening Outlook, go to this folder location again
and copy your old files to it. (You can rename or delete
the ones that are there). Then, when you open Outlook,
things should be almost back to normal. I always have to
do a little tweaking - the Address book doesn't always take
but I've had no problems with the folders. SOmetimes I get
two copies of the personal folders in the Outlook directory
(on the left) - I just delete it from the program. If you
don't, autoarchive sometimes backs up the wrong one.

By the way, if you have any rules you need to export them
separately. You can do that through Outlook (In the Rules
Wizard, choose OPTIONS and you can export from there).

Hope this helps.

Chris

Thanks for the feedback.

As suggested, I have Hide extensions for known file types, un checked and
Show Hidden Files and Folders, checked. I closed and opened Win Exp twice,
and search still does not turn up any PST or PAB files. However when I went
through the path anonymous suggested, there is an Outlook.PST file! Now
where is the PAB file? And am I doing something twisted so that search
can't find these files? Is XP twisted? No, don't answer that.

XP (and W2K for that matter) consider these files "Hidden System" files, so
if you are doing a search, you have to enable the search to look for Hidden
and System files. (Advanced Search options)
