How accurate are the Asus temp sensors?

I have a P4P800 SE MB and I've had a few weird readings from the sensors
onboard. A couple of times my CPU sensor has jumped from about 48C to 89C
without anything being the obvious cause. Also my system sensor on the MB
once jumped to 120C from about 35C.

Is it something simple like a bit of dust getting into them or maybe the
software being buggy? Or are the sensors a bit iffy?

I would suggest comparing the BIOS hardware temp reading with ASUS Probe and
crosschecking it with Sandra and PC Wizard 2004 and Motherboard Monitor 5.
You should note that there will be a difference depending on whether the
core/diode or the socket temp is being measured (using MM5). I have noticed
that there is a 4-5C difference between the various readings. (Sorry, but
can't comment on the drastic jump other than to suggest that you watch for a
CPU fan/heatsink problem.)

I notice the same weird reading on my P4B80-E Deluxe. I have been
watching the readings using both ASUS Probe and MBM 5 and both showed
a spike jump of the CPU temperature from 33deg to 86 deg. suddenly on
two occasions. Each time, I shut down and rebooted to check the
Hardware Values on the bios - on both occasions the CPU temp was
reading 32 - 33 degree !

I am using a Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu CPU Cooling System and its purring
along at 2376 or so RPM. I've noticed that the Chassis fan is not
reading ok too. The Chassis Fan and the PSU Fan sometimes drops to
below 200 RPM. I know this is wrong because the chassis fan is a
constant speed fan, unless something else is interfering with it. On
the bios , I have the ASUS QFan Disabled yesterday to see if this is
responsible somehow, I guess not.

My motherboard installation is only a few days old - its not the
dust! This is weird.

You are not supposed to run Asus Probe and MBM5 at the same time.
The author of MBM5 is aware that a semaphore is required to access
the hardware monitor chip, but the author of Asus Probe has not
implemented that feature. The two pieces of software fight over
the hardware, and errors result. Uninstall one of the tools and
see if the values stop jumping around.

Some power supplies have special jacks, marked "fan only" or something like
that , and allow the power supply to regulate the speed of the fans plugged
into them

Thanks Paul.

I uninstalled the Probe and MBM is reporting ok now. My CPU Temp and
Fan Readings are all stable now.
