Hi,

I've read through the posts on using msconfig on w2k to remove
unwanted items from startup. I've downloaded the XP version, saved it
to C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32, ran it and unchecked the items I wanted to
banish from startup, clicked Apply, rebooted and none of the changes
were saved or should I say applied.

So each item I unchecked came back checked and still opened on
startup.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance :)

Works for me.
Make sure to run it under Administrator.

That did the trick, thank you! The other likely mistake I was making
was selecting "normal" when the dialog box popped up after rebooting.

Thanks again :D
