I am unable to create hover buttons. Program only creates one (jpg or gif)
file, rather than three. Code references files being in
"...Local%20Settings/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/FrontPageTempDir/buttonXX.."
However, I cannot find that folder on my computer and only one button file
transfers to my web folder when I save.

You need to have your web open, not just a page.
Open FrontPage, then click File > Open web ( Open Site in FP 2003 )
then open a page to edit.

Probably oughta say something about not using hover buttons since they are
Java based, and most people won't see them? Or not....

web is open. But when I save, only one image is moved to the web directory
folder. The other images are listed in the code as being filed in
....Temporary Internet Files/FrontPageTempDir. However, using Explorer I
cannot find that folder.

You need to create your image in a image application, then import into your current open FP Web /
Site, then insert or link to them.

That folder is hidden, and the files shouldn't be there anyway.

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm
and download the free FP Cleaner.
run the functions that clear the FrontPage Temporary files and the Cache {.web} files.

Then see what happens.

Thanks. I can do that. Just thought one advantage of the FP program was that
it creates those nice little buttons with labels all at once without having
to use another graphics program. Actually, with the java issue -- I should
probably forget multiple image buttons anyway.

FP will, if you are using the interactive buttons (FP2003) or theme generated buttons, but you must
have web / site open first

Which gets back to my original questions -- why are the files in that
location (and why with Explorer set to view "hidden" files can't I find that
folder).

The folder is a super hidden folder.

When FrontPage creates the Interactive Buttons they are stored in the
FrontPageTempDir folder, along with copies of all other open files,
until the page is saved, then they are copied into the images (or
wherever) folder in your web.
As Thomas said, the FrontPageTempDir is a superhidden folder. The
only way you can see the contents is to go directly to it - you cannot
browse to it.
Copy/Paste the following into the address box in Windows Explorer:

%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir

and it will take you straight there.
