I have a laptop with netgear router and adapter -works great in house.
I've heard it will work in airports and cafes by picking up a 'hot spot '
signal.
Is this worth trying? Seems odd if I don't have the particular card i.e.
verizon etc.
Opinion please?

If the Laptop have a wireless card capability (internal one which most
recent ones do anyway) it will work on any Hotspot.
Which you should look for is the Bluetooth access as you can be done easily
through bluetooth sharing if not secured?.

Turn the bluetooth and just use the Wireless feature behind an Anti virus
and firewall and all will be fine!.

What the odd in being able to access Hotspots?, is it because it is free?.
Note: there are some security measures on the Hotspots, I think?.
HTH.
