Hotmail Popper is a small application that allows you to check your
Hotmail account e-mail from a normal POP mail client (such as Eudora).
Unlike standard mail accounts which allow users to retrieve their e-mail
through a POP mail client, Hotmail can normally only be checked on the
web, or via Outlook Express. With Hotmail Popper, you can use your
favorite POP mail client to retrieve your e-mail from your Hotmail
account. In addition, Hotmail Popper allows you to send e-mails through
Hotmail's service, as if it was a normal SMTP (outgoing mail) server.

FYI Works a treat on Outlook 2000.

POPpeeper does the same, but covers many more webmails than just Hotmail.
I find it very convenient for my yahoo accounts.

I'm fairly new around here - so do forgive my ignorance if
I'm missing something ... but what is it with the aversion
to doing a quick google search?

Usually when someone doesn't quote a link, it's highly
unlikely this won't get you what you want:
http://www.google.com/search?q=poppeeper

Or for a neat surprise, click this:
http://google.com/search?btnI=&q=poppeeper

I think if someone provides a link for you, that's really
convenient and nice of them - but it shouldn't be a
requirement, or demanded of them.

Though not required it would be nice when people recommend software
to also post the URL also. Some people pay for their (some
times very slow) online usage by the minute and can not spend the
time or $$ to look this up. Just my 2 cents worth.

As far as Hotmail is concerned, from it's homepage description,
POPpeeper does not provide the same service as Hotmail Popper.

Hotmail Popper virtually turns Hotmail into POP account, accessed like
any other POP account thru your preferred compatible email client, the
best part being that you can now apply message rules to Hotmail.

POPpeeper appears to be in the same category as Mailwasher: enhanced
Email Checker, but with less features, except that it does than read
HTML mail on the server (see
http://www.thundercloud.net/infoave/spamadvice/).

It promises more features in the future, like spam filtering, but as
of now it does not. There are also several "known issues" which
should be noted.

I have Hotmail Popper installed, as SWMBO use Hotmail for all her mail,
and using it allows her to keep copies of all her mail, and I can back
it up.

I pulled down POPpeeper, and when I looked at it, it had one immediate
problem, it uses the "Internet Connection" settings to set the proxy it
talks through, it's not configurable, bad. It also didn't "just work,"
I was able to get Hotmail Popper running in a few minutes, just
configure it, add an account to Moz, and click "Get Msgs."

IMO, not a replacement for Hotmail Popper, if you want to POP mail from
Hotmail, this is the way to go.

If you have other needs, POPpeeper may be perfect for you.

That's right. The forte of POPpeeper is to access all kinds of webmails from a
single app. And indeed this app is not full-featured.

I find one feature of POPpeeper very valuable: I set the default mail reading as
"View as Rich text" (ie no html) and it previews safely mails without risk,
without confirming my address through webbugs/etc and without using up b/w.

I use it to keep an eye on 10-some accounts with different providers, to read
lists mail, and to scan the other mail. I then activate a full client (or web
access) to answer, file, etc.
In that role it is very useful to me. YMMV.

PS: for all the brouhaha about the url, I make no apologies for not giving it.
When a url is just www. + .com, if someone won't even figure that out on
his/her own, well, though. There is nothing I wish to do to help.
