HI,

Hoping someone might have an idea what has happened!!!!

I had a friend mention that I had sent them a weird email with advertising in it etc on tuesday this week- which I found a bit weird as I had not been logged into my hotmail account since last friday.

So I went to check my hotmail account- it appears this email (which I did not personally send) has been sent to all my contacts!!!!!

I then checked my contact list and they have all disappeared!!!!!

I then logged into my MSN account tonight- and all my messaging contacts where there and now have all disappeared!!!

I also have a facebook account and wonder if this could possibly be interconnected!!!

Cheers Nattyocean

Was the e-mail related to something from facebook? I know some applications will actually log in to your hotmail account and send out "invites" to people in your address book.

I would check the details in the e-mail that your account sent and see where it might have come from.

Hi Ian,

I have just gone to my sent items in my hotmail account and the email it self is there- I am reluctant to open it as obviously I don't want to activate something!!!!

When I looked at it at work today, it states in the sent from (there were some outdated email addresses in my account- with delivery failure notices) my account.

When I looked at the content it was sale items regarding mobile phones etc - and I can't find any associations to any applications on my facebook account.

Someone suggested it might be a trojan (???) but then one of mates just sent an email saying was I aware there had been a virus sent via an email from myself and another (mutual) contact.

Could it possibly be safe(ish) to open from my sent items or leave well alone??

Cheers Nattyocean

I'd think it would be safe to look at your sent mail folder - just don't download or view any of the attachments if there are any. If it is advertising mobile phones, then that does seem very strange indeed.

First of all, I'd run a virus scan and spyware scan on your PC if you haven't already - and then change your hotmail password :)

Please change all passwords ... and I mean all passwords.

You are probably one of 100,000 people that may/have become a victim of socially engineered malware.

Zango on Tuesday denied claims that it is involved with a harmful software program linked to the Facebook social network
This is just the tip of an iceberg ...

Rumors of an official release of Windows Live Messenger are circulating, but early adapters beware! Last week, the anti-virus company Sophos identified the existence of Troj/Msnfake-M, aka, MSN Live Password Stealer ... a trojan horse that masquerades as the new release but in reality, is destructive.
Old news, but unfortunately still very prevalent.

I just received this mail from a friend:

It was sent from a HTTP connection into GMail, and was delivered from there using valid DKIM, Domain Keys and SPF signatures. In addition, it was sent to all the addresses in his address book. In other words, this was no run-of-the-mill impersonation spam — for this one, the spammer obtained my friend’s username and password, logged into GMail, scraped the address book, and then sent spam via GMail that way.

My friend says he didn’t access GMail using a desktop mail client, but did have his Google password saved in his web browser (a pretty typical configuration). My theory is that some virus/malware has infected his desktop machine, captured the saved-passwords file from the web browser configuration, and used that to log into GMail. Alternatively, it could also be a guessable username and password which was picked up via dictionary attack, I guess …
Just one of many I know of ...

Spyware and Other Malware

Scan your machine: I'll start with the obvious stuff that I would hope you're doing already. MSN Hotmail, Facebook and the rest, can be affected in many different ways by both viruses and spyware. It's important that you run an up to date virus scan and spyware scan regularly.

Double-check and use at least two seperate on-line AV scanners, such as HouseCall & Kaspersky

Check your hosts: A common target of malware is the "hosts" file, C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts. Open it in notepad. If you see "hotmail.com", or "passport.com", then the file has probably been compromised malware. If that's the case rename the file to something else.

Download & run HijackThis, post a log here and we'll take a look.

As for your friends, get them to do the same. :thumb:

A client of mine brought me his laptop and I got to see this issue first hand. First we logged on to messenger, then we clicked on the email icon and IE opened up to the client's Hotmail account. Norton AntiVirus' AutoProtect was automatically disabled with the launching of IE. After waiting only about 30 seconds a spam message was sent out to all my client's contacts. This has been occuring for a couple of days. There are two files in Norton's Quarantine from 2 days ago: cpu.log and NTDETECT(2).COM (both have unknown threat names). The file responsible for desactivating AutoProtect is an IE Add-On named updater.dll.
