hotmail opens fine. when i click on a link it says error
on page. nothing will open ????????

msblaster worm?

The blaster worm like does some funky RPC error when you boot up and makes
you restart. Ugh. <shudder>

You can check those adaware sites and all that the other folks in this
usergroup keep pointing other people to. That may be your best bet.

I have two users who have the same problem. As I understand it,
Hotmail recently went through a change on their website and when that
happened, these problems started happening.

The behavior is that the users can log into Hotmail just fine and can
see folders email messages and the like. When they try to open a
message to read however, nothing happens and in the corner "Error on
Page" appears. This also happens when they try to compose a message.
In the further analysis, checking the details of the problem, I
initially thought it was a Javascript problem as the page would not
seem to open a page with a Javascript call. However, I went to
another user and she was getting the same behavior with out Javascript
errors, but instead just simple CGI calls. I have one user who I
upgraded to IE6 with no results (the one with the javascript error)
and the other user is on IE 5.5 sp2.

The only thing that seems odd about these error is that they are only
happening on laptops (which may be a total anomoly, but it's hard to
ignore).

I will try to post more relevant information as it comes to me.

Hi,

I don't have a laptop and today my IE6 shoed me "error on page" when i treid
to get on hotmail page or another one with java on it. Standard pages with
plain text or nothing special are working just fine.

Everything was ok yesterday.... hotmail page was ok too. But today I open
my computer and tried to go on some pages and the error message showed up.
I have JVM 3810 and tried to reinstall it. It did not help. I had this
problem before, but I reformat my hard disk and reinstall everything. But
this time I dont want to start that again.

I think that IE6 got mad but itself! Or what?

Thanks for your help.

IE Tools>Internet Options>General>Accessibility> If anything's checked here,
uncheck it.

Now find out what caused them to be checked:

Dealing with Hijackware

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred
tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

Nothing was checked there are we are not experiencing any problems
with spyware. This is looking pretty odd right now. The users have
no problems logging onto their Hotmail accounts from desktop PCs with
the same software with no luck. I find it odd that they can log onto
Hotmail, see their folders, see what emails they have, but are unable
to open the emails or even compose new emails. When they click on any
of these, the only thing that happens is that in the lower left-hand
corner in the status bar, there is an icon with the message "Error on
Page". When I open it, all it states is that it couldn't open the
page and then provides the hyperlink it was trying to open.

Any other ideas?

Tim

Unless you've used HijackThis and posted the files to SpywareInfo forum for
expert analysis, you haven't ruled out hijackware/spyware IMHO.

NB: New URL for HijackThis is http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip.

Some other users of New Hotmail, using both desktops and laptops, IE and OE,
have been having these problems since the new format was introduced on 01
Dec-03. Some users are seeing Hotmail messages arrive with blank message
bodies.

Hotmail is a secure site, requiring that your computer be able to negotiate
SSL protocols when logging in, so any of these third-party applications may
be interfering (as well as hijackware): anti-virus, firewall, anti-spam
tools, "system" tools (NSW, NIS, anything by McAfee). The best approach
would be to disable all of them and, assuming Hotmail then works properly,
re-enable each application in turn, by itself with no others running, to see
which one or which combination is causing the problem. If the machines are
on a network, that's another area to consider when troubleshooting.

Make absolutely certain each machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update
(and with virus definitions) and that the 5.6 Scripting Engine has been
reinstalled:

If WinXP, look into the Java vs. Java VM situation ("Breaking up is so very

Tim:

Can you do what Robert is suggesting and get back with us? After that, you
may need to call in for support. We can get a netmon and wininet.dll log
created and perhaps look at some other things, but you'll need an SDK
version of wininet.dll with appropriate instructions for creating that log.

I'm also having problems with "error on page" message and know that a
couple of folk signed up with NTL/Tesco are having same problems.
Funnily enough, when I access Hotmail through the MSN browser I have
no problem opening mail, its only when I use IE6 that problem occurs.

You have either virus or spyware/hijacker. There are some parasites that
affects only to Internet Explorer and blocks access to some web mails
servers like Hotmail. First run full virus scan and then use free tools like
Spybot search & destroy. They can eliminate spyware and hijacker programs,
which are not usually recognized by virus scanners.
