Whenever I try to log on to my hotmail account from my laptop I get an
error stating that "IE has encountered a problem......" and gives me a
choice to send the error report or dont send. If I choose either of the

options, the entire IE window just disappears. This just seems to be
the problem with hotmail. I can log on to my yahoo account just fine.
I have tried deleting my cache, and cookies, still no luck.
Thanks for your help.

Yeah, I have the same problem. I can open my hotmail, but as soon as I try to
open a mail, it errors and closes. I tried many self help troubleshoots and
contacted my manufacturer, but to no avail. Help please??

Hi :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, try the
following and see if it helps:

Trouble logging into Hotmail
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers_10.htm#hotmail

Check your HOSTS file and see if the site is there.
Check for a hosts file (just "hosts" not hosts.sam or lmhosts) in these
locations:
Windows XP. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K. C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME. C:\WINDOWS
You may have to enable the viewing of hidden files.

Rename your HOSTS file to OLDHOSTS and see if the problem persists.

Also, try adding the site to your IE Trusted Zone.

Try deleting the TIF folder and History folder for that user account. See
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Go to the Windows update site and have it scan for any missing critical
updates that may be causing this problem.

Go to 'Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab. Scroll down to HTTP settings.
Uncheck use HTTP 1.1 and check 'use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections'
Click 'OK then close and re-open I.E.

also..

Tools | Internet Options | Privacy
Click Sites.
Enter the following site and click Always Allow:

Hope this helps.

Hi country roadie :-)

Thank you for the update information. Is this something that just started?
Have you been able to get into your Hotmail recently?

Did you install and 3rd party software, toolbars, updates, devices,
hardware, etc. just prior to the problem?

Hi country roadie :-)

There are various reasons this problem:

First, check you machine clock, be sure the date and time is correct.

Also, try the information here, there are several suggestions that might

Hi country roadie :-)

A couple of other things to try:

Clearing the Temporary Internet Cache -
Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
Note: Any links listed in your Favorites (including any pages you saved for
offline viewing) will not be deleted when the History is cleared normally.
Therefore, you must also check the box next to Delete ofline files on the
dialog box as well when you clear the Temp Files to be sure all files are
deleted

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Security tab>
Click the Internet icon in the windows and then click the Default Level
button.

If still no joy......this type of problem can also be caused by some types
of malware or parasites, so work through the following to be sure your
system is free of any scumware.

Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can
replicate themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly. Follow
the steps here:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Also, download and install HiJackThis. This is one of the most important
steps. Follow all instructions carefully. This program should be run in
Normal mode.

How to download and install HiJackThis: Win 98-XP
http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html

Please.. DO NOT post your log HiJackThis log to this newsgroup. DO NOT
delete anything from the list yourself unless you are an experienced user of
this program. It is important that you post your log on one of the
HiJackThis Support Forums below and allow the experts there to analyze it
for you:
AumHa HiJackThis Forum
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30
to allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of any
necessary steps to clean your system.
(Note: You will have to Register before posting on these Forums. Please
follow all posting instructions carefully to avoid having your log deleted
or ignored. All responders are volunteers and they are very busy, so please
be patient.)

Please post a link back here to your log post at AumHa so taht we can follow
your progress there.
