Hello...
I am making an up-to-date installation cd using nLite, and i would like to

I have already slipstreamed sp3 in and i don't want to spen a long time
updating whenever i install onto another computer.
Any help?

Yes - updates have been released since the release of SP3 for Windows XP.

sorry, i should have been more specific. i would also like to know where to
get these updates, and/or where there is a list or download site for them

Microsoft doesn't support this kind of slipstreaming hotfixes, becuase it has
the potential to do away with the genuine (non-pirated OS) check.

I have however tried to do just this.

I failed miserably, becuase many of the hotfixes are .EXE files which don't
slipstream in to an nLite install.

The time killer is downloading any post service pack updates to .NET 2.0 and
..Net 3.0 and their own services packs. These alone add up to about 3 reboots.
grrrrr.

Hope that helps.

What?

Most critical post-SP2 (and thus, Post-SP3) patches can be integrated into
the Windows XP installation media. They do not support integrating some
things like Internet Explorer, Media Player, the .NET Framework, etc
because - well - technically they are not critical to the OS. Nothing keeps
anyone from running post-install scripts (a feature easily used in an
unattended type installation) to install the latest versions of each of
those.

Unattended. Scripts. Start the install, walk away, come back to a complete
install.

Such as:

http://unattended.sourceforge.net/
http://appdeploy.com/

HTH

damn. pehaps they can be slipstreamed like service packs????
where can i get these exes though, because apparently nLite supports
slipstreaming them?

thats what i figured, but where can i get the actual files? i think
they are exe.

Know that .NET, IE7, Media Player 11, etc are *not* patches. They were not
meant to be integrated into the installation media. Security and some other
patches/updates *were*.

The web pages i gave you earlier - if visited and actually looked into -
would have a more comprehensive 'list' as well as updates/how-tos and so on
than I could hope to put here in a single posting without making it
annoyingly long.

My standard spiel...

Each month Microsoft puts out that months patches in an ISO format for
burning to CD:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086 (Back to 2006)

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2006's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-may.mspx

January 2007's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-jan.mspx

April 2008's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-apr.mspx

There's at least one third party tool that will download all of them for
you:
http://wud.jcarle.com/

If you are getting these for integration into a cd or some sort of
installation...

http://unattended.msfn.org/
and
http://unattended.sourceforge.net/

Those two sites have lots of good information on making a great unattended
installation process for Windows XP. Whether it is for CD or over a
network.
