I was removing some software when I came across "Windows
XP Hotfix." What is this exactly and is it necessary to
have on my computer?

It is a security update you installed by updating Windows at Microsoft. It is
necessary if you want the security.

Yes. If you want, you can delete these uninstall entries to shorten
the list in "Add and remove Programs". In the WINDOWS folder find the
folders named $NTUNINSTALLKBxxxxxxx$ (the KB may be replaced with Q in
some cases, xxxxxx stands for a number which is the number of the
Windows patch). Delete the folders. Then find the KBxxxxxxx.LOG files
in the WINDOWS folder that have the same number and delete them as
well. Now click the uninstall entries in "Add and remove Programs" and
let Windows remove them.

These are the critical updates (mostly security-oriented) that
you've been downloading all along. Do not remove these, or you
will put back the security exposures they were designed to fix.
You can however delete their backup files. See
