Hi,

I've been trying to get this hotfix from Microsoft for about a week now.
In the Knowledge Base article
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942435/en-us) it says to click a link
to submit an online request to obtain the hotfix, but I've done that
about three times over the last week and nothing has happened. I'm not
so sure that this link is actually working, because the form that is
displayed after clicking on the link does not mention the hotfix number
anywhere, there's no field to enter it, and the URL does not show the
hotfix number either.

I don't have a support contract and it's a pre-installed OEM version, so
I don't think that writing to MS support will help.
Is there another way to get this hotfix without waiting for Service Pack
1? (Found it for download on some web sites, but I'd rather get it
directly from Microsoft.

Hmm it worked for me, I followed your link, entered the details including my
email and was told I would get a response from MS within 8 hours!

That is the correct address to obtain the hotfix.

Make sure that you have filled in all of the fields, including a working
email account. Check the link there about spam filters to make sure their
address is not being blocked.

It's definitely not blocked, and there was nothing in my spam folder
either. It puzzles me that there is no way to indicate which hotfix you
want. If the KB number was passed automatically by clicking the link
from within the KB article, wouldn't you expext to see it in the URL or
somewhere in the request form?

Yes, that's how far it worked for me as well, but it's been rather 8
days now and I haven't heard anything. So I was wondering if maybe the
missing reference to the KB number on the request page means that the
functionality of that form is broken somehow.

They did change that form. In the original form, there was a box where you
would enter the KB number. Apparently, this was changed and the number is
automatically recorded when you go the link directly from the KB article
that the Hotfix refers to.

Make sure that enter the version of Vista you are using in the "Product and
version affected" box.

Of course. Believe me, I have filled in everything. I have also tried it
with different E-mail addresses just in case, but still nothing has
happened. You know, I wouldn't think anything of it if the confirmation
didn't say that you would get a response within 8 hours. If it's just
that these 8 hours are totally wrong and it takes much more time to get
a response, I guess I can live with that.

I filled in the form you had linked to and got a reply email and
download instructions within just a few hours. Certainly far less than
eight hours.
Great, thanks for the info. Now I know at least that the form is
functional, that's something.

I have received the mail with the link now. Don't know which attempt
finally was successful, this could very well be the reply to my very
first attempt, maybe it just took that long for some reason. I did
nothing differently than with my first attempt. Anyway, problem solved.

That's great!

I also don't know what the problem may have been, but I'm glad it finally
worked for you.
