Hotfix automatically installed?

Dean J. Garrett

Hello,

We noticed the following entry in our W2K system log file:

Windows 2000 Hotfix KB823980 was installed.

We did not download or install this hotfix. Does W2K automatically install
it's own hotfixes? We did not run the auto-update feature of SP3, so the
default should be do-not-install.

Any clues? Thank you.

This is getting more confusing. One of our clients experienced a hacker
attack on 7/17/03. Just prior, this hot-fix having to do with RPC calls was
installed on the server. We did not install it, and the hosting company,
Interland.com did not install it. Now, another client's server shows that
the same hot fix was installed. We did not install it, and the hosting
company, Dellhost.com did not install it. I have no idea how a hotfix is
installed without operator intervention.

Yes, I checked that, but the setting for Autoupdate was set to notify me
first when a new update is available.

Autoupdate can be configured to automatically download and install.
Check what it is set to in the Control Panel.

If autoupdate is enabled, it won't just install stuff on its own anyway,
AFAIK - it will download it, but not install it. Don't quote me; I'm not
100% sure on that one.

Regardless, if you don't have autoupdate enabled to begin with,
someone
has
installed this hotfix. Maybe you have network gremlins?
