I have the 3-platter version of this drive (ones made in the last couple
months should be 2-platter), and it runs about 10C hotter than a 2-platter
160GB drive of the same model in the same system (no, swapping position
doesn't change anything, and I'm using all the fans I can already).

So, while the 160GB drive can stay within a couple degrees of case ambient,
the 200GB is always about 10C more, which with warmer weather approaching,
has already pushed it into the upper-40's. The drive is rated at 55C, which
I can easily see hitting when summer arrives.

Is this a problem that you guys are seeing with this drive too? Is it one
solved by using the 2-platter model, as is suggested by my slightly smaller
drive?

Thanks

A HD doesn't dissipate that much heat:
o Try to place the drive so it receives direct cooling from the fan
---- where airflow is over both the top & bottom of the drive
o Try to ensure airflow is smooth thro the case
---- your rear upper fan holes all have fans & exhaust out

Multi-platter drives will run hotter - but cooling isn't impossible,
at most it probably dissipates 15W which doesn't need much cfm.

Get air over the drive, and get the heated air out of the case.

Drives will run quite warm, often close to their max temperature.
Temperature spec is generally the drive body - and actual items
like motor drive ic's and such can run notably hotter than that.

I was quoting the S.M.A.R.T. figures, which I assume corresponds to the max
temperature figure given in the spec. It's all I have to go on in any case.
Unfortunately, with the case I have (Sonata), I've done all I can do to try
to pacify this particular drive, which runs so much hotter than its cousin,
due to the extra platter and who knows what else. The fan needs to be
mounted in such a way that all it can do is pull air through the case to the
back (it does have a clear path), and it cannot be blowing on the drives at
all, since it's to the left of them. It's helped for about 5C compared to
not having it there, but that's not going to matter once things warm up
further in coming months. I'll probably just have to get another drive, or
just take a chance at running it at 60C or so, which I'm sure it'll hit.

Hi,

Sorry for jumping in, but I've been very interested in the Sonata case or
(more probably) the Antec BQE case for awhile, and have been looking into
it.

I thought that you might be interested in the review of the BQE on
SilentPCReview, where there is a bit of discussion about the sideways
mounting of drives in these 2 cases, and drive cooling. Here's a link:

In particular, you might review pages 3 and 4 of the above review...

That was interesting, and they're definitely right about the sideways
mounting of these cases contributing to the problem. If you have a
hot-running drive, I can't imagine why you'd want either, particularly the
Sonata, which only allows you to mount the fan to the LEFT of the drives.
