Hello,

Can the premium rate dialler that's found its way on to my friends pc dial
out using just his broadband cable connection ? or is it as I suspect this
piece of unwanted crap needs a regular phone line and modem to operate. he
tried anti virus software but doesn't know if this has got rid of this
thing. and can auto diallers work only on 56k modems as I keep telling him
can anybody settle the argument !

I am pretty certain that the rogue dialer programs need a real modem and
are basically harmless if you are using broadband. Try using Google with
the name of the dialer and the word "remove" to see which piece of
software out there will remove it.

Hijack this should remove it & a bunch of other issues that I'm sure his
pc has. you can get it from majorgeeks.com

& if a modem & phone line aren't connected to his pc, the dialer can not
dial out, however; it can lead to other problems, just not a huge phone
bill.

The various dialer programs need a regular or analog modem which hooks up to
a regular phone line. A cable or DSL modem can not be used to dial out to
a regular phone line. Even though a DSL modem uses the regular phone lines
it is not a Hays compatible modem. Hays commands are those used by analog
modem. If you have a regular hays compatible analog modem, you can open up
a ms-dos prompt and type without the quotes "ATDT 6631234" and you would
hear your modem dialing it, AT= Attention D= dial T=Tone

It won't use the broadband, but beware if he still has a second/backup
connection which is attached to the phone line, eg for the fax modem.
The number will be dialed, no matter with which device, IF there is
something hooked on the phone line.
