if you remove them in Add and remove programs, you will UNINSTALL the patch.
To remove the entries in the Add and Remove box, use Tweakui.

Hi John,

Do not "remove" them per se, but if you want to get rid of the entries (and
preserve the associated updates), there is a utility on www.dougknox.com
under WinXP Utilities that can do this for you.

The "hard way" is to delete the associated $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ folder under
%windir%. Then go to Add & Remove and select the entry for removal. You will
receive an error message, followed by a prompt to remove the listing.

If the Windows Update files have been deleted, the entries
in add/remove can't be removed.
From TechTV Call for Help Oct 31

Deleting MS service packs
Jim from Burbank, Calif., called asking if it's safe to
delete Windows update files. The folder's taking up 300MB on
his hard drive.

It's safe to empty the contents of the folder. The
consequence: You won't be able to remove any of the hotfixes
that were in the folder.

They showed a MS Article but did not include the KB number
in this post.

"Hotfixes" are the updates you installed from the Windows Update
website. Do not be tempted to remove them or you will uninstall
the actual updates.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.
