Hello
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction on how to
use windows dns to host several different external domains/zones. The
idea was to essentially replace my isp's dns or use it as backup but
setup the same locally using windows dns in my dmz. Any help is
greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Basically you are just creating secondary zones on your machine and specify
the Master as the ISP's DNS servers. You can contact your ISP to allow zone
transfers to your IP. If you want to host the zones on your machine for the
public, then you need to register your DNS servers as namservers as SOA for
the zone. The Registrar REQUIRES two nameservers. Do you have two DNS
servers to host this stuff? I would also recommend it is NOT your AD DNS
servers.
That it in a nutshell. It's not difficult, just time consuming and need to
follow the requirements. Honeslty I would just keep them at the ISP's. It's
alot easier.
If you need documentation on how to create a zone, I can provide that.
Otherwise, there are no real docs on how to setup host a server on the to
hosts zones on the Internet other than going to one of the Registrars for
their instructions. If you have an account at Network Solutions, I believe
there are some instructions there.Log into your account and check it out.
