necessary infos to set up an e-mail account.

I'm with aol it sends mail fine in the e-mail program i get this message when
I try to respond on craigslist

Impossible. You entered under Server name, " POP3 ". You'll never get any
mail with that.
Also POP3 is for in-coming mail, nothing to do with your sending mail OUT.
You obviously had settings all messed up.
Here is the AOL link for setting up your e-mail account with proper
settings. Read each step carefully. The link says Outlook Express. it's ok.
It works for Windows Mail too.

Being able to send via AOL Mail has nothing to do with sending via Windows
Mail, which is your default Mail Client in Vista and which is invoked when
you click on a MailTo link (e.g., in craigslist).

Here's a KB telling you how to set-up an AOL account in Outlook Express.
Use these settings to set yours up in Windows Mail:

Or contact AOL Support for assistance.

Perhaps you have more than one account configured in Windows Mail and the
default account is not configured properly. Your AOL account might be a
different account in your Windows Mail. If so then you need to remove the
mis-configured account. The AOL account might become the default after you
delete the other one, or you might need to set the AOL account as the
default for you.
