Hello,

My name is Pat. I'm completely new to home
networking, so I apologize in advance for not knowing the
lingo and taking up your time. I have a home computer (OS
is Windows ME) that's DSL connected. I have a LinkSys
EtherFast Cable/DSL Router. I wanted to set up a home
network with my notebook whose OS is Windows XP Home. The
hardware connections are good to go.
My first question is: Can the host (Internet
connected) computer have ME, and the client computer have
XP, in order for the latter to be Internet connected?
Second, I went through the Network Setup Wizard for
both ME and XP computers, but I could not get an Internet
connection on the XP client computer. When I go to "View
Network Connections," it says that the Local Area
Connection is Enable, Bridged, and so is the 1394
Connection and Network Bridge.
Can you please inform me as to what I'm doing wrong
and how I can fix it in newbie terms. Thanks so much.

Welcome, Pat! We were all beginners once. ;-)

The network setup depends on what type of DSL connection you have.

If you have an external DSL modem, your cable/DSL router will share
the connection with both computers. There won't be a need for a host
computer, so if you've installed Internet Connection Sharing on ME,
un-install it. Connect the DSL modem to the router's WAN (Internet)
port, and connect the computers to its LAN ports. Run Windows XP's
Network Setup Wizard on both computers, telling it that they connect
to the Internet through a residential gateway -- that's the Wizard's
odd terminology for a cable/DSL router.

If you have an internal DSL modem mounted inside the ME computer,
follow these steps:

1. Don't run XP's Network Setup Wizard on ME.

2. Install ICS on ME, as shown here:

ICS Installation [WinMe]
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ics/icsmeinstall.htm

2. Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP, and tell it that it connects to
the Internet through another computer on the network.

3. Connect both computers to the router's LAN ports.

4. Disable the router's DHCP server. The ME computer will act as a
DHCP server for the XP computer.
