Hosed the Registry

I inadvertantly hosed my registry and now XP won't boot
up. I want to save what files I have on this HD so I
would like to set up a new HD with the same XPpro
installation and hook up the old HD as a slave. Will I be
able to do this without purchasing a new version of XP?
