Getting rid of it and replacing it is probably the nastiest thing about
it, and quite likely to result in some of those horror stories. I'd put
it off until you have a good few spare hours, and access to another PC
'just in case'.

Why limit yourself to McAfee? What about KAV, NOD32, BitDefender,
F-secure, F-prot....

I don't know what your problem is.

Once a year I uninstall and re-install NAV 2002 (System Works 2002) on
a bunch of PC's to get another year of auto-updates. Most are running
Win-98, a few are running 2k. A couple are running NT4 server (and
for those I use NAV 2001).

I used to remove (delete) all registry entries having the string
"norton" or "symantec" in them as well as deleting all
Symantec/Norton/shared directories that are left behind to insure the
install would get me another year's worth of validation. But now I
just delete the directories. Never have any problems doing that.
Systems work great.

From what I see in the XP newsgroups, you need to go to Symantec's
site and download the uninstall wizard. Apparently the program
uninstall that comes with the installer dowsn't actually work.
