I just formatted my hard drive yesterday and put a fresh
install of XP Pro on the system partition.
The problem: When I open certain programs, Windows
freezes for a few seconds, then frees up, then freezes
again. I notice that right when it frees up, CPU usage
drops from 99%, and then freezes again. The programs I've
noticed causing this are WinMX, WinZip, and Bit Torrent.
The problem remains until I close that program, but after
the first freezup, I lose my internet connection until I
restart (odd). I've tried installing all windows updates,
removing all windows updates, restoring the system,
REformatting and REinstalling, and nothing is stopping the
persistent freezups. I've checked system event, error,
alert logs.. nothing. I've checked the device manager for
driver problems.. nothing. I've checked the hard disk for
any bad sectors or errors, and I've disabled
authentication on my ethernet card... also nothing.I
didn't have this problem until I formatted and reinstalled
XP.
Does anyone know what is going on? This is the most
irritating problem I've ever experienced. It would be
easy to say just to not use these programs, but I'm sure
there are more programs that would cause these errors, and
they have always worked just fine in the past.
I'm also using a laptop computer so the option to remove
hardware from the system is not available to me, but I
don't think this is the problem anyway. I haven't added
or removed any hardware in a long time, and I'm getting
these problems all of a sudden.
