Horn blows at Start-up

A horn?? I have two XP systems, and both start up with a short musical
passage, but not a horn!

Anyway, if you go to Start Menu - Settings - Control Panel - Sounds and
Audio Devices, you'll start out on the Volume section. There's a toggle
switch for Mute just beneath the volume slide. I usually keep mute on, and
turn it off when I want to play a music CD (note the other toggle, "Place
volume icon in the taskbar", so you can go directly to it instead of the
long march from the start menu).

Next, note at the top of this dialog, there's a tab "Sounds" you can switch
to. You can pick out any of the many sounds Windows plays for various
purposes and replace them with some other sound. If you click "Browse",
you'll get a file dialog showing all the standard sounds. You can
right-click on a sound and select "Open with..." and choose e.g. Windows
Media Player to hear what it sounds like.

The Help & Support Center on the Start Menu explains how to record your own
..wav files with a microphone using Sound Recorder. If you don't have a
microphone, that's no problem if what you want to record is a moment of
silence! Then, after you record your moment of silence, you can save it and
select it as the sound for "Start Windows" (using the dialog described in
the previous paragraph).

The only 'horn' I know is when ICQ starts up. - if this is the case go to
ICQ properties and disable the start at system boot option.
