I want to convert my servers from standalone to 3U rack mount. Does
anyone know if there are plans on the web to build a 3U case? There a
little too expensive for me to buy. I was going to but rack mount
shelves and just mount everything on it , but would really like to have
an enclosed case.
thanks,
brian

Not quite 3U, maybe, but you can buy low tower cases that fit on a
standard rack shelf. You've got 17 1/4 inch clearance between the
brackets.

I've heard of mounting mobos and PSUs on a 17 1/4 by something bit
plywood and rack-mounting them with brackets and putting a bunch of
them in a 7 foot rack, bareneaked, so to speak.

If you really want it in a box, I think you could buy a standard rack
shelf with 3U ears, drill holes in the pan for your mobo mounts and
fasten the PSU down somehow. Cut a front panel (wood or aluminum) to
fit the front panel and top.

A sheet metal shop could cut and bend an "L"-shaped panel
like this:

top

--------------------
|
front |

It would neatly drop into the open space on the shelf.

Yo could also make it of 1/4 inch plywood and spray pain it black.
