COLUMBUS, Ind. -- The Lord giveth, and Dana Clark Hughes giveth right
back.
Hughes, identified as a homeless man, told Bartholomew County workers
he found an envelope containing more than $1,500 in cash on a Columbus
sidewalk Thursday. He turned the money in at the county government
office building across the street.
Hughes said he believed the discovery was a type of divine
examination, according to Rose Johnson (pictured, left), an employee
of the county treasurer's office. He said God was testing him.
Officials said Hughes later boarded a bus and headed to Oklahoma to
see his sister. The county will give the money to Hughes if it isn't
claimed within a couple of weeks, county Treasurer Vernon Jewell said.
When asked why he didn't keep the money, Hughes said, "Some little old
lady probably lost this ... she's probably looking for it."
Workers at the Love Chapel, a place that helps homeless people in
Columbus, said they didn't know Hughes, but they said they were
touched by what he did.
"He said whoever's money that was, they might need it more than he
did. And that touched me because we think people who are homeless are
in desperate need," Love Chapel's Lisa Teague said.
Elizabeth Kestler, who also works at the Love Chapel, said she
believed God tests people in the way Hughes described.
"He definitely made the test, didn't he?" Kestler said. "If (only) we
could all do the same."
The person to whom the money belongs can claim it if he or she can
correctly identify the envelope and tell him the exact amount of cash
it contained.
