Does anyone know if it is possible to put together a homegrown laptop and a
good source of parts??
I have built several desktop models and am interested in taking this a step
further.

Simple answer: No. There are no standards for the parts once you get away
from RAM, Hardrives, and the PC-Card interfaces. This appears to be slowly
changing, but not very soon.
