Was the Windows XP installed from a CD supplied by the laptop
manufacturer?
If not (e.g. a retail version of Windows XP was used) then go to the
laptop manufacturer's web site and download & install the Windows XP
updates, including video drivers, for your specific laptop model.
Also this particular situation, on a laptop or with an LCD display on
a desktop system, means that the resolution setting chosen is lower
than what the manufacturer designed the display for, such as using 800
x 600 on a system intended to use 1024 x 768. So if the driver
updates do not resolve the issue then try increasing the screen
resolution to the next higher value.
Good luck
