We have 20 computers connected basically peer-to-peer. We
have severe slow downs over our network. Someone
suggested upgrading from Home to Professional should fix
this problem.

Is it true that Professional is customized for Networking
for 20 computers and Home isnt?

I don't think that upgrading to Professional will fix the slow down
problem.

There's only one difference that I can think of between XP Home and
Pro in a peer-to-peer network: A computer running Pro allows 10 other
computers to connect to its shared resources simultaneously, and a
computer running Home allows only 5 other computers to connect to its
shared resources simultaneously.

So in essence if we have 20 computers connected to this
computer, Prof will make better use of the resources over
Home.

That depends on how you use the resources. If no more than 5
computers ever need to connect to a specific computer's shared disks
and folders at the same time, Pro vs. Home will make no difference.

With 20 computers, I'd consider a domain (client/server) network
instead of peer-to-peer. However, XP Home can't log into a domain
network. Only Pro can:
