Home video to computer?

I'm sure this is very simple but I am only familiar with using Macs. At school with have macs and to get the video to the computer there is a nice handy adapter box that sends it through. I have a sony handheld and it uses a cute little tape. Unfortunately, I obviously don't use a mac or a digital camera. How can I get my video footage onto my computer for editing? I'm sure there is a simple answer to this but I've searched... a lot, and have come up empty handed. Thank you all.
 
Your Sony handheld with the cute little tape must have come with a cable to
connect it to your computer and software to install on it to get the video
files. What is the model number of your Sony handheld?
