Home SP2 -> Pro SP2 Upgrade Fails... Blue Screen, 'contact S...A..

1) New system - purchased last Thursday, 'Vista Ready', XP Pro Compatibility
check ok.
2) Home SP2 pre-installed, XP Pro is upgrade version, already SP2 -
purchased with computer
3) Chose upgrade, not fresh install
3) Everything fine through copying files, when saving config, blue screen,
reports internal error (but no error code, of course) and says, contact
System Administrator. 'Repair' install fails at same place.
4) Install to new folder (C:\WINXP) is 'successful' - of course drivers are
missing (e.g., no network), to say nothing of some pre-installed apps.
5) Saw what might be a similar post for a HP a630n, thought it might apply,
but couldn't find the referenced 'full details' post in Setup forum. A link
would be nice????
6) Please, no responses simply suggesting Home is/may be adequate. We've
done our due diligence.

Anyone have suggestions? Is it possible the SP2, "Don't let anyone overwrite
any important files" security fix is responsible?

Well you blew it from the start...Thier is no "upgrade" from home to xp pro.
The upgrade is for older windows OS..To install pro over home, simply install
xp pro cd,exit the info page, restart computer, boot to xp cd,at boot screen
menu,
select install xp,new copy,delete the partition(home),create one,then xp for-
mats the hd and installs auto...Its the only way to do it right..

Andrew,

Thanks for the reply, but I beg to disagree. I forgot to mention I followed
the MS Upgrade directions for a 'quick' upgrade from Home to Pro in the
manual that came with my XP Pro SP2 upgrade kit.

I've also spent some time in the MS support pages - there is nothing in
those pages to suggest I cannot upgrade from Home to Pro.

You may be correct saying, "It's the only way to do it right." However,
because of the driver issues, I don't really want to go down that road. ...
And MS and other posts in these forums don't agree with that, either.

Thanks again for the reply.

Ignore Andrew, he frequently gives wrong and dangerous advice.
You are right about the upgrade and the upgrade from Home to Pro is one of
the easiest and most likely to succeed. But always backup as if you were
doing a Clean install.

Sorry, I forgot to to give you a suggestion that might solve your problem.
If you have any external periferials connected to the computer, remove them
and reboot before trying the upogrde

Did you ever figure out how to resolve this problem? I have the exact same
issue with my new Compaq Presario.
