This is my third post on this problem and I still have no solution.
In order to share a DSL connection with another computer, I networked
them together
using the home phoneline system (HPNA). To make a long story short,
when all was said and done the network connection does work to the
extent of making folder and file sharing possible but as long as it is
connected the DSL connection is lost and in order to use DSL you have
to disconnect the local network.
I just spent a lot of time talking to about four people at ATT/Yahoo
DSL support and one or two at 2Wire (maker of the HPNA phone line
adapters) tech support.
The last guy I talked to was the only one with a clue. He concluded
that I had to have a router between the DSL modem supplied by ATT and
the host computer.
It clearly states in Windows XP Help and Support and on the Microsoft
web site that the only hardware required for a home phoneline network
are one adapter for each computer apparently because enabling ICS
(internet connection sharing) on the host computer in effect turns the
host computer into a router.
Now I find it said on the ATT support web site that even though you
might get by without a router using ICS there are disadvantages (e.g.
you have to leave the host computer running to access the internet
connection) so you're better off using a router.
I'll buy that, all things being equal. But, hey, there's a whole
bunch of "routers" out there with prices running from petty cash to a
big ticket. How to choose?
