PETER

My home page is no longer msn.com. It is now
http://www.hotwebsearch.com and whenever I try to change
it back to msn.com (through tools, option, etc.) it
changes back to http://www.hotwebsearch.com/. In addition,
the "use current" in the address section is greyed out. It
is no longer set to msn.com and I can not access it. This
change occured about a day ago. In addition, under the
address line at the top of IE there is now a line that
says "search the web" and includes references to
pornographic web sites. If I right click on this line I
can hide it but I can't delete it permanently. It is
called WorldAnywhere.com bar. How do I get rid of it
permanently? When this happened (and I can't figure out
how) I started getting pop ups all over the place (mostly
porn). How do I fix this? Please help. I have young
children, I can't let them get on the computer now.

Do not worry about how technical the solution is, even
though I am no longer in the technology field, I did
program for about 15 years.

Thanks in advance,

Peter Koppelman

Peter,
You have been hit with SPYWARE... Do this:
Download and install Ad Aware 6.0 from the URL below.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ Open the program and immediately
hit the UPDATE button and run the program... Delete everything
it finds. Reset your homepage if you can...
If no cigar, do this next one.

Download and install SpyBot Search and Destroy.
http://patrick.kolla.de/spybotsd.html Do the same as above with
this one, but read the instructions carefully.. This program is powerful.

If still no cigar, download and install CWSHREDDER.
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip and the same applys
as above... Be SURE you UPDATE these immediately after you open
them EACH time you use them... They are updating them several times
a week to keep up with the scumware.
Also make sure your Virus Scanner updates are current and do a full
system scan
If this doesn't work, we have another solution.

Thanks for the info. I just ran spyBot and I'll see if it
helps. I'd already run Ad Aware. We use it at work and it
usually helps. My question is how did they change the
default web page in IE? I don't get it. Everytime I change
the default web page back to msn.com somehow it gets
changed back to the other web site. I'd like to kill
whoever did it. See how they feel when someone screws
around with their computer. I wonder if you can sue these
guys?

Make sure you have the latest Ad Aware build. Lavasoft rather quietly
released a minor revision to AdAware 6.0 several months ago. If you're not
using build 6.181 you won't be updating your reference files.

Also, check your Add/Remove Programs applet and uninstall anything you
didn't specifically install. Uninstall anything calling itself a "browser
enhancement" or a browser toolbar that's NOT Yahoo! or Google. Many of these
things still haven't made it into the spyware reference files.

Peter,
Do the CWShredder if SpyBot didn't catch it.. CWShredder
will clean up about everything... Yes, the scumware people should
be removed of their gender!!! They literally hijack your browser
home page and then put theirs in it's place and in the doing, they
shut off some of the items in the browser so you can't change it
back and that is where these programs I gave you come in... They
will clean it up... There is one more program that is more severe
but I don't send it along unless all of the above fails.
