www.majorgeeks.com Look for the Spyware Tools link on the
left sidebar.

What is a CGI limit problem?

I have found that since I updated AdAware two days ago it seems to
deactivate the 'Lock Browser Homepage' function of SpyBot. Has anyone else
noticed this? I keep getting redirected to Microsoft Network as my
homepage.

That is what was happening with my wife's W98 computer,
redirect to MSN.com. Ad-Aware detected two "possible hijack
attempts" and they were deleted using Ad-Aware. However
after rebooting the hijack was still there.
Installed SpyBot 1.3.5 from www.majorgeeks.com [link at
Spyware Tools] after not being able to get to the
Safer-Networking site (the cgi limit) is probably that their
ISP has shut them down because of too much traffic.

SpyBot did detect several (10) hostile items including CWS
and others. It removed them and it seems to be fine. I also
ran the "repair IE" that W98 has in add/remove programs
because I was getting an unstable computer, crashing even
when clicking the START button.

I just installed the new SpyBot (1.3). Hoped it would be immune to
AdAware's attempts to disable home page protection. It wasn't. I ran
AdAware and the new realtime module of SpyBot detected continuous attempts
to change the home page. As soon as I rejected one in SpyBot, another came
through. Had to disconnect the cable, and restore protection in SpyBot.

It seems that I cannot run AdAware until they fix this bug.

You may have a hijacker Adware, rather than the program from
Lavasoft Ad-Aware.
The paid Pro version of Ad-Aware can block hijacking (the
free version I run doesn't).

The free SpyBot S&D v. 1.3.5 does have the homepage hijack
protection.

I might indeed have a hijacker adware, though it did occur right after
downloading an AdAware update. Why would it take me to MSN? Also, this
happened once before, again right after downloading an AdAware update, with
the same thing, that is, unchecking the IE homepage protector on SpyBot.

It does seem strange that a hijacker would send you to
msn.com but who really knows?

I get these too. One every day.

My default page is "blank", and this works fine until I use ADAware to kill
the browser hijacker, then next time I use IE6 the page is hijacked to msn.com.

Changing it back to "blank" is fine until the next deletion of the hijack
program.

I guess I will have to use SpyBot alone without using AdAware until (1)
AdAware updates to stop interfering with SpyBot, or (2) SpyBot updates to
prevent AdAware from altering it, or (3) either of them updates to remove
the MSN hijacker.

use ADAware to
kill is hijacked to
msn.com.
From what I've read, it's possible that it's going to the
MSN page because that's the Default home page in windows,
rather than a result of the hijack attempt. I say that
because you say blank sticks until the next spyware check.
Possible?

That is correct. I found out in the AdAware user forums that I have to add
Browser Hijacks to my Ignore List every time there is an update or I will
end up at the default home page, that is, MSN. Apparently this only happens
if you set your home page to Blank. AdAware sees Blank as a browser hijack
attempt.

Very interesting. This must be something that happened
recently, in the last week or two with an update data file
because Ad-Aware did not do this before.

Maybe they'll fix it in the next.
