I have 1 computer running XP and another running 98. I
have 2 ethernet cards installed in the host and 1 in the
2nd. I have a cable internet connection and have run
network wizard on both machines. Both machines have
internet access and I can see both computers in the work
group but can only access the files on whichever machine
I am using and get an error message when I try to access
the other computer.. check for permissions etc and server
not found. All sharing of folders and drives are set up
fine. Is there a reasonably straight forward solution to
this as I really need to access both computers from
either one.Thanks in advance

I had a similar problem.
I had forgot to check the Box "Allow users to connect
remotely to this computer"

Path: Right Click "My Computer" > "Properties" > click
the "Remote" tab and make sure the box is checked.

The XP machine is the host and has 2 ethernet cards, 1
connected to tha cable modem and the other to the xover
cable. The error message is \\server is not accessible
you may not have the necessary permissions .. the network
path not found

I've written a web site that should help you solve the problem:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.

To the best of my knowledge, Tom, that box has no effect on file and
printer sharing. It determines whether other computers can connect to
XP Pro using the "Remote Desktop" program. The box doesn't exist on
XP Home Edition.
